A Shore good time
You may have read a previous post I wrote about my favorite summer getaways. Every year my family and I take a special trip down to the Jersey Shore. Not to be confused with the fist pumping, Snooki/J-Wow Jersey Shore that you may know about, but a town called Seaside Park.
It’s about a mile and a half south of the Seaside Heights Boardwalk and has a totally different vibe that I can get down with. There are beautiful beach houses for rent as well as a few different lodging options. Most hotels come with free beach access to miles of clean and calm sandy beaches.
If you’re looking for a place to relax and eat some fresh seafood that’s just under a 2 hour drive from New York City at an affordable price, consider visiting Seaside Park for your next beach getaway!
If leaving from NYC, Seaside Park is just under a 2 hour drive. I usually meet my family there midweek and stay for a couple of days, whereas they stay the full week. I grab my coffee and get on the road fairly early (no later than 10 am) to be sitting on the beach, drink in hand around noon. If you leave anywhere between a Thursday evening and a Saturday, you’ll be sitting in some heavy traffic, so plan for a 3 hour ride if that’s your only option.
I can’t leave the shore without going to two places in particular. One is the famous Bum Rogers Crabhouse that serves up the cleanest, most succulent blue crabs you’ll ever eat. They are finger-licking good. If you don’t mind putting in some heavy work to earn your food, don’t miss Bum’s famous garlic crabs!
The first morning I wake up in Seaside, I get on my bicycle and head over to Park Bakery for their glazed apple donuts. If you followed my instagram stories, you know what I’m talking about! I savor every last bite and usually bring some home with me! My mom loves their jelly donuts which are pretty fantastic too.
A cool taco joint in town is Surf Taco. Try the mango coconut shrimp taco if it’s on the specials menu, but be prepared for long lines at lunch and dinner. Call in your order in advance for quick and easy pickup.
Right next door is Beach Culture serving great cold brew, smoothies, and acai bowls. There are few things in life I enjoy more than an acai bowl. At $10 a bowl, it’s a little steep, but the fruit is super fresh and the homemade granola is very tasty, so it’s totally worth it to me! I got the tropical bowl with banana, mango, pineapple and organic peanut butter. There’s a variety of bowls and smoothies to choose from. You can’t go wrong with an acai bowl; they are both healthy and delicious!
I never leave the shore without a stop at B&B for beach gear and gifts at great prices. You can find everything from beach themed home decor, swimsuits, and everything else you’d want to wear to the beach. I scored a beautiful beach dress that I can’t wait to wear on one of my upcoming trips. One of my own personal traditions is picking out special postcards wherever I go. Yes, I still snail mail postcards from vacations. I love the personal touch of a hand written postcard.
Yoga on the Beach
I typically go for an early morning run along the beach, but this year I brought my yoga mat instead. I rolled it out on the sand with the waves crashing behind me. It was such a peaceful practice. I was playing the Moana soundtrack on my phone and these lyrics were so empowering to me as I practiced:
See the light where the sky meets the sea
It calls me No one knows how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I’ll know
If I go there’s just no telling how far I’ll go
I borrowed my sister’s bicycle that she brought, but you can rent a bike in Seaside Heights. I love riding my bike into town and stopping to admire all the beautiful beach houses.
Watch the Sunset
You can go to the bay side of town and get a great view of the sunset. Park on the side of the road and walk down the pier for a fantastic view of this stunning sunset.
Thanks for reading and sorry for the lack of photos! I guess that tells you I was really enjoying every moment and not taking as many photos as I normally would for a blog post. I hope you caught some action on my instagram stories as I rode my bike around town.
Hope you’re having a great summer!
