Ripe For a Girl’s Night Out
Sometimes life gets hectic. We get so caught up with work and responsibilities that we forget to plan night’s out with our friends. One of my very good friend’s insisted that we were ripe for a girl’s night out (Jamaican style), so we put it on the calendar and stuck to it!
There were only a few parameters: strong drinks and good food at a nearby establishment. We decided on Ripe, a small Jamaican restaurant in Mount Vernon, NY. You could literally walk right past this restaurant and miss it. It looks like an abandoned house from the outside, but when you walk in it feels like you’ve just entered a little beachside restaurant in Jamaica. Perfect for an intimate night with the gals.
They offer different drink specials for happy hour every day. On Wednesday margaritas are $6, and flavors include mango, coconut, and guava. I was very pleased with the regular margarita on the rocks with a salted rim. My friend got the mojito which is served with a stalk of sugar cane, just like in Jamaica (and Tulum). Beware of the drinks! They taste so good, but they can creep up on you. Limit yourself to one if you’re driving, two if you’re not. Thanks to @becomebetty for being our designated driver so my other friend and I could indulge in more than one cocktail!
The menu is small, but has chicken, fish, meat, pasta and salad options. Appetizer offerings include jerk chicken wings and a plantain boat with codfish- sweet and savory. @BecomeBetty and I shared the plantain boat for an appetizer. Main dishes include the famous “Big Ass” Steak and finger licking jerk chicken. I ordered the full chicken and got 2 meals out of it! Terri went the healthier route with the grilled jerk chicken over a green salad and Brenda got the special of the night: Jamaican Tacos.
The place is small. There’s only seating for about 30 including the bar area. The reggae music is loud, but not to the point where you can’t hear each other. Funky African artwork lines the walls and goes well with the whole vibe of the restaurant.
I’ll leave you with the restaurant’s definition of Ripe: reggae, real jerk, rum, vibes. What more do you need? Get your girl’s together and go enjoy a night out!
