My First Ever Yoga Experience
“Stretch further,” said Erica as I strained to extend my arm further behind my back than I thought possible. “What did Ashley get me into?” I thought to myself as my shoulder approached its pain threshold. I was dripping sweat and straining as I tried not to look like a complete newbie. Most importantly, I was trying not to embarrass myself.
I was at Nueva Alma Yoga and Wellness Studio, in Yonkers, New York on an invitation from Ashley. Or was it a challenge? I believe it was a little bit of both. She had been trying to get me to go experience a class with her for a few months now. I had also been wanting to do it due to curiosity and also because despite being a runner, I feel that my body is not very flexible. Would the yoga poses and stretches help my flexibility? I was in the process of finding out.
Now back to the class. I was initially embarrassed because I arrived to class about 15 minutes late. But Erica made me feel welcome and comfortable right from the get go. I took my place on a mat that had been laid out for me and immediately got going. I was feeling good because I was able to keep up with the class. We were doing a variety of challenging poses and stretches that I’m not even going to try to name because truthfully, I don’t remember them.
The poses and stretches that we did that evening took a toll on my legs. I felt my muscles straining in places that I had never felt before. I know that part of the yoga process involves paying attention to one’s breathing, but all my concentration was focused on trying to do the poses correctly. Towards the end of the class, Erica instructed us to do a headstand. What?! I’ve been doing them all my life, so that was the easiest pose for me to do. I was surprised and relieved that there was something that I could excel at!
The evening ended with meditation and prayer from Erica which I really appreciated. This was coupled with a nice smelling oil that was placed our hands that we were then instructed to breathe in. It was a perfect ending to the evening class and really mellowed me out for the long ride back home to Connecticut.
The next day I felt relaxed, albeit with a bit of pain on my legs. I really feel that the stretches and poses that we did could really be beneficial for my agility during long runs. I took advantage of the special that Nueva Alma Studio is running for new students, it allows for unlimited classes for the first month. I enjoyed my first ever yoga experience and I figure that it is something that I could see myself doing in the future on a consistent basis. I really look forward to many more classes to come!
